FRANCIS HAMEL
‘Rousham, through the gardens’
Hamel has lived on the Rousham estate in Oxfordshire for over twenty-five years. Designed in the 1730’s by William Kent and regarded as his most complete and unspoilt creation, the gardens at Rousham have been a constant source of inspiration for the artist during those years. Locked down in March 2020, and with the grounds empty of visitors, Hamel was presented with a unique opportunity to capture the spirit of this magical place through the changing seasons.
The complete series of over eighty paintings were gathered together for an exhibition first at Rousham and then at the John Martin Gallery in London and coincided with the publication of a new book on Rousham with essays by Francis Hamel, the novelist, Joanna Kavenna, garden designer, Tom Stuart-Smith and Director of the Garden Museum, Christopher Woodward.
